 There is no such thing as a small
crisis. High-Reliability Organizations know
that environmental concerns and labor
disputes are not the only source of problems or bad media
coverage. Tampering with
products, internal sabotage, mergers and acquisitions, unfounded rumours,
intempestive resignations, sudden death, arraignments of senior
executives, unexpected legislation, newspaper articles on lack of
diversity in a corporation, the bankruptcy of important clients,
the list goes on : any of these unwished-for regional, national or
continental events can have major global effects on a company whose senior
management needs to know what's happening now, not next week. Recently an American company discovered, from very negative
comments by its local labor force in the French Sunday newspapers, that its subsidiary in France
had been on strike for seven days. The CEO of a major global beverages company had to quit the
organization only a few months after a major,
but largely unfounded scare, had been mishandled in Belgium and the North
of France. The company's
stock price has still not recovered, however present management has seen
that the mishandling of a nearly non-existent dioxine problem just had to serve as a wake-up call.
Now it is decentralising management, advertising and communications responsibilities instead of thinking
it could manage the detail of what is going on in whole continents from a
city in the United States. The viral effects of the internet can
spread rumour and gossip around the world in a matter of minutes and a
company's global/national clients, employees and shareholders need to see immediately that even small crises are
being handled professionally in internet time. |

During
its short existence Systems and Resources has handled and facilitated
situations stemming from an American company's outsourcing of major
activities, the negative effects left by disputes between organised labor
and management, advised and assisted managers who know they are about to face hostile
environments, used alternative dispute resolution and systems intervention
techniques to reconcile different factions around necessary organizational
